The Melaka State Election has officially ended and the results are as per expectations. Barisan Nasional is definitely the biggest winner in the election, they have managed to secure the majority needed to form the Melaka state government without needing to form a pact with any of the other coalitions that it was competing with.

The two-third majority that the coalition has won is expected to bring about the much-needed stability in the state that have seen multiple collapses of its state government in the recent years brought about by state assemblymen crossing the floor and switching allegiances.

Pakatan Harapan on the other hand is the biggest loser in this election as they have lost a total of 10 seats since the 14th General Election. As expected, Pakatan Harapan was only able to secure the Chinese majority seats as a majority of the Malay leaders in the coalition has left. Some left the coalition to form the newer parties of Muda and Pejuang that did not contest in the state election but the majority of them have actually left with Bersatu to form Perikatan Nasional.

Perikatan Nasional, the newest kid on the block that has never had a strong foothold in the Melaka state has won a meagre 2 seat. A performance that can be regarded as lackluster for a coalition that had briefly taken control of the federal government resulting from the highly controversial political maneuvering coined as the Sheraton Move.

If the result of the Melaka state election is any indication of the national sentiment, it could be safely concluded then that Barisan Nasional will be able to take back control of Parliament in the coming 15th general election with relative ease.

The political parties within Perikatan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan thus need to take heed of the warning signs and adapt their political strategies accordingly. As the saying goes “there are no permanent friends or permanent enemies, only permanent interests”.
