Budget 2022: Government begins negotiations with opposition parties

According to Deputy Minister of Finance II, Yamani Hafez Musa the government has begun discussions with the opposition parties before Budget 2022 is tabled in Parliament next month.

This is following the historic bipartisan memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties on 13th September.

The framework of the Budget 2022 has been revealed through the Pre-Budget statement that has previously been released by the Ministry of Finance.

Based on the Pre-Budget statement the Budget 2022 will be formulated with priorities towards:

1. Continuing programs to support and spur economic recovery in line with the gradual reopening of the economic sectors.

2. Ensuring continuity in policy and assistance provided to the people and businesses through strengthening resilience in facing crises by protecting means of livelihoods and income opportunities.

3. Catalysing structural reforms in the post-pandemic period for the nation to emerge more competitive in addition to ensuring greater sustainability and inclusiveness in its development agenda.

Overall, Budget 2022 will be drafted with the expectation that the economic situation will recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic next year.

As such, it will focus primarily on continuing to protect and restore the lives and livelihoods of the people and businesses, rebuild national resilience, and catalyze post-pandemic reforms.
The Budget was also said to strive to ensure that no person or business is left behind in receiving the Government’s assistance and support, especially those severely affected by the prolonged MCO in 2021.
